What is upcycling?

Upcycling means reusing materials without breaking them down, giving them a new life with renewed value. A sleeping bag might become a backpack, or an old banner could be turned into a stylish tote. Fraenck specializes in this process, operating out of their own social workshop in Arnhem.

The properties of waterproofing

When looking for clothing that keeps you dry, it's important to understand what "waterproof" really means. Often, "waterproof" is seen as the ability to keep you completely dry, but in reality, it is a range from water-resistant to fully waterproof. This is measured with the water column in millimeters (mm).

While it's tempting to stay cozy indoors, we also love this season for its outdoor activities - from peaceful walks in nature to adventurous winter camping. To stay warm when temperatures drop, knowing how to dress for the cold is essential. The key? Layers! When it comes to dressing for winter adventures, it all comes down to layers, their material and their order. Always start with a moisture-wicking base layer, followed by an insulating layer and a protective outer layer.

Sleeping bag: Orion 290

Mummy sleeping bags are generally lighter, more compact and keep you warmer than blanket sleeping bags. The latter is especially important is you sleep at high altitudes. The weight of the Orion 290 sleeping bag is only 590 grams and will keep you warm in temperatures between 2-7 °C. For temperatures between 7-11 °C, the Orion 180 is a good alternative.

Camping trips in winter are wonderful. You experience nature in a completely different way and it is often wonderfully peaceful. Compared to camping in the summer, winter camping is a bit more challenging - or should we say snowy? - in terms of preparation.

1. Build a 'sleep system'

When we talk about a 'sleep system', we mean the combination of the right gear to make yourself as warm and comfortable as possible at night. When you use a sleeping bag, the filling is actually always compressed in the areas you lie on, which means that the insulation value at those contact points is reduced. Less insulation means less warmth, so what can you do to compensate?

This is where building a "sleep system" comes in. Cold doesn't just come from the air, it comes from the ground. The best thing you can do here is combine your sleeping bag with a warm sleeping pad. "Is there such a thing as a warm sleeping pad?"
